Twitch Emote Size Guide (2026): Exact Dimensions, Formats & Upload Rules

Updated July 3, 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: Twitch emotes are 112×112, 56×56 and 28×28 pixels — square PNGs with a transparent background. Or skip the resizing: upload onesquare PNG (112px–4096px, under 1 MB) and Twitch auto-generates the smaller sizes.

Every emote on Twitch exists in three sizes at once. The big one appears in the emote picker, the medium one in previews — but the version your viewers actually see, hundreds of times per stream, is the tiny 28-pixel one in chat. That's why emote design is really small-size design, and why getting the technical specs right matters before you spend a minute on artwork.

Why the transparent background is non-negotiable

Twitch chat isn't one color. Viewers use dark mode, light mode and channel accent themes — and your emote sits directly on all of them. A white or colored box around your emote instantly looks broken for half your audience. Real alpha transparency (a proper PNG, not a JPG renamed to .png) is the single most common thing Twitch rejects emotes for.

If your source image has a background, remove it before uploading — AI background removers handle this well today. (Our generator runs background removal automatically on every emote, so the PNGs come out transparent by default.)

Designing for 28 pixels: the rules that actually matter

Whatever looks great at 112px will be judged at 28px. These rules come from how emotes hold up at chat size:

Skip the resizing entirely

EmoteGenerator creates transparent, Twitch-ready emotes from a text prompt — all sizes (112/56/28px) included automatically. Your first emote is free.

Sub badges: even smaller, even simpler

Subscriber badges (72/36/18px) sit next to every chat message from a subscriber. At 18 pixels, detail is physically impossible — think flat icon, not illustration: a single bold shape, 2–3 colors, no outlines thinner than 2px at the 72px master size. Many streamers use a color-shifted series of the same shape for different sub lengths (bronze → silver → gold).

How to upload emotes to Twitch

Affiliates and Partners unlock more subscriber emote slots as sub points grow — the exact count for your channel is shown right on the Emotes page in the dashboard.

FAQ

What size are Twitch emotes?

Twitch emotes come in three sizes: 112×112, 56×56 and 28×28 pixels. The 112px version shows in the emote picker, 56px on hover, and 28px is what viewers actually see in chat. All three are square PNGs with a transparent background.

Can I upload just one file instead of three?

Yes. Twitch can auto-generate the smaller sizes: upload a single square PNG between 112×112 and 4096×4096 pixels (under 1 MB) and Twitch creates the 56px and 28px versions for you. Check the result at 28px though — automatic downscaling can blur fine details.

Do Twitch emotes need a transparent background?

Yes, in practice. Chat backgrounds vary (light mode, dark mode, channel themes), so an emote with a solid background looks like a sticker slapped into chat. Use a PNG with real alpha transparency.

What are the rules for animated Twitch emotes?

Animated emotes are GIFs at the same 112/56/28 sizes, with a file size limit of 1 MB and a maximum of 60 frames. Animated emote uploads are available to Affiliates and Partners (Twitch has been expanding access over time).

What size are Twitch sub badges?

Subscriber badges use three smaller sizes: 72×72, 36×36 and 18×18 pixels — also transparent PNGs. At 18px almost no detail survives, so badges should be simple shapes with strong colors.

How many emote slots do I get on Twitch?

It depends on your status: Affiliates start with a small number of subscriber emote slots and unlock more as they earn sub points; Partners get more slots at each tier. You can also add follower emotes. Your exact slot count is shown in the Creator Dashboard under Viewer Rewards → Emotes.
